MONTANA RAIL LINK DISCONTINUED all active rail operations as of January 1, 2024. BNSF Railway Company has assumed operations across the former MRL lines on the newly-designated MRL Subdivision of the Montana Division of BNSF. The map on this page depicts the lines currently owned and maintained by MRL.

THE MRL REAL ESTATE DEPARTMENT handles the administration of agreements related to the use of property retained by MRL. MRL is not currently accepting applications for new commercial, industrial, or pasturage leases on its retained non-operational lines. However, MRL is accepting applications for proposed utility encroachments and modifications or repairs to existing permitted utilities. Utility-related applications can be submitted to the Real Estate Department at the link below.

Using railroad property may involve the resolution of complex issues, which is why all applications go through a rigorous administrative review process. Please make note of the important instructions involved with the application.

Please contact us if you have questions regarding an existing commercial relationship with MRL, including active real-estate agreements on retained non-operational lines.

For operational, shipper, or real-estate inquiries regarding lines formerly operated by MRL, please direct those to BNSF at bnsf.com.
