Montana Rail Link is proud to announce that Lyle Evans, MOW supervisor, has been named as the MRL 2009 Safety Person of the Year. Lyle has been employed by MRL since start up in 1987, and has worked in the railroad industry since 1974. He currently serves as the Dixon Section Foreman; however, he has worked all across our system during in his more than 20 years with the Company.
Lyle has been exemplary in his safety efforts and takes immense pride in leading his work groups efficiently and safely. As a foreman of small and large work groups, Lyle verbally, and through his actions, demonstrates and promotes safety as the most important of his work assignments. He has participated in all aspects of MRL’s safety program from serving as a department safety representative to training supervisor with the track department. Because of his extensive work experience, Lyle knows and respects rules and regulations. Through each job briefing and as work is performed, he demands safe work performance of employees and equipment. During the 2008 track maintenance season, Lyle worked system-wide as a training supervisor for the track department. He would target work groups with inexperienced employees and then spend several days with them teaching rules compliance and safe work practices. Under his supervision, the Dixon Section crew has gone over 5,200 days without an injury!
Lyle’s work ethic and safety-first attitude make him a desirable asset on MRL’s large scale maintenance crews. His ability to mentor the inexperienced is matched by his ability to lead the seasoned railroaders. Supervisors across the system value Lyle’s leadership and commitment to safety and often ask him to be involved on large-scale projects. Whether it is building a new track for an industry or field training new employees, MRL relies on his experience. For Lyle, the reward is not to have the Company think so highly of him, but rather that each of the members of his crew goes home safely each night.
